Important new developments in Almotsarfiya building's case

Tripoli 11/1/07.Exclusive:Ajdabiya Online

Well-informed sources have told A.O that the Libyan minister of tourism Mr. Ammar Altaiyf is expected to approve the report handed to him by the committee formed of six members of the society of Historic Cities & Buildings that has visited the city of Ajdabiya, about a month ago to examine the historical value of Al-motsarfiya building. The committee has recommended in its report to the minister that the building should be announced as a historical building and then it should be transformed into a museum… just as we at Ajdabiya Online suggested in our website more than a year ago!

The report of the committee was based on the "Story of a building" report from our website. Its informations and exclusive images have been the only historical resource on the building!

We're working right now on organizing a small ceremony, in which we will deliver the Al-Motsarfiya Friends Petition and other supporting documents and pictures.

More developments on the case of Al-motsarfiya building along with the ceremony documentation will be published on our website very soon.

Description:

Ajdabiya is in eastern Libya 18 km inland from the coastline of the Gulf of Sirt.
It lies on the Mediterranean coastal trade route as well as at the start of a 200 km route inland to the Ujlah Oasis. Ajdabiyah has a good source of fresh water and has thus been an important locale since Roman times, when a garrison was established at the site. The city flourished during the Fatimid period of the 10th century.
Two buildings remain that date from the Fatimid dynasty: a qasr, or fortress, and a mosque. The buildings have been documented by travelers throughout history and were excavated in the 1950s and 1970s.

Did You Know :

That Ajdabiya once was The capital of Libya ? historic resources tell us that After the decree establishing the autonomy of Cyrenaique(Barqah) on 31 October 1919, the Italians ( who were occupying Libya at that time ) granted Idriss el Senoussi as Emir on 25 October 1919, but with authority only on the regions of Koufrah, Djarabouh, Audjila and Djalo, with Ajdabiya (Adjedabia , Agedabia) as the capital. The text of the treaty states that the Emir was allowed to hoist his flag along with the Italian one, but does not describe the flag. The Senoussis used mostly black or white flags ornamented with Quran verses. The flags had sometimes a coloured border. The treaty was denounced by the Italians in 1920. The 1947 flag is a black field with crescent and star. It might have been the 1919 flag but there is no historical evidence for that.
